A New 'Les Miserables' Featurette Focuses on Hugh Jackman

The Illusion: 'Songs From Their Souls'
As they entered discussions for the film version of "Les Misérables," director Tom Hooper and producer Cameron Mackintosh agreed that there is something about movie musicals that is essentially false: It isn't that actors break into song—a convention the audience accepts—but that, with the music recorded well in advance of the filming, actors are challenged to make relevant in the moment a song they performed long ago. (The Wall Street Journal)
Russell Crowe 'had tough Les Mis audition'
Russell Crowe reportedly felt like he was being judged by “ten Simon Cowells” when he auditioned for Les Misérables.
The actor portrays policeman Javert in Tom Hooper’s musical movie adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel.
Russell was desperate to win the part as soon as he heard the film was in the pipeline and was reportedly willing to do anything to secure it. He had to show off his vocal skills in front of many of those involved with the production, which was daunting. It’s been claimed Russell felt like he was trying out for a singing competition in front of famed acid-tongued reality show judge Simon. (Film-News.co.uk)

Eddie Redmayne, 'Les Miserables' Star, On Sets That Smell Like Dead Fish & Singing Till You Bleed
In "Les Miserables," Redmayne stars as Marius, the romantic lead of the film's second half, an upstanding youngster who falls head over heels in love with Cosette (Amanda Seyfried). It's a role Michael Ball made famous in the original London production of "Les Miserables," and it provides Redmayne with a stand-out moment: a heartbreaking rendition of "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables."
Redmayne spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about landing the "Les Miserables" role, why this might be his last musical, and how the set smelled when Hathaway sang "I Dreamed A Dream." (Hint: Bad.) (Huffington Post)

'Broken City' Second Trailer: Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg Clash
The premise for the film is familiar in that it’s a genre picture. Wahlberg plays a cop hired by the mayor (Crowe) to see if the mayor’s wife (Zeta-Jones) is having an affair, but that’s just where things get interesting. Fighting against corruption, Wahlberg must become the lone wolf who finds redemption and the truth in his pursuit to get out from under Crowe’s thumb. This comes from director Allen Hughes, who knows his way around genre. (ScreenCrave)

Anne Hathaway 'specific' about movie shoes
Paco (Delgado, costume designer) explained it wasn't just the women who were challenging to find shoes for. Hugh Jackman had a strange costume request for "wooden clogs" that he insisted he wore on set.
"Hugh Jackman [playing Jean Valjean] had a combat leather boot look and very rough espadrilles. He also wanted to wear wooden clogs," Paco finished. "It was very difficult to walk in them, but he figured out how to do it. And for Russell Crowe [in the role of Javert] it was all boots." (Belfast Telegraph)
Movies That Everyone Should See: "L.A. Confidential"
(Bud)White is burly and brutish. He’s ill-tempered, especially around those that are abusive to women. His Captain personally selects him for the goon squad, using him to beat on mobsters who are trying to encroach on the territory. When he falls for a prostitute who makes her living as a movie star lookalike, she softens him up, and he reveals his own motivations. But he also has to confront the anger within himself… is he as dangerous as the men he despises so much? (Fogs' Movie Reviews)

Hugh Jackman gets his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Hugh Jackman got his star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame on Thursday, introduced by Jay Leno and supported by his "Les Miserables" costars Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.
"I believe this is the 2,487th star on the Walk of Fame," Jackman told the crowd, "however, apart from Lassie, I'm the only one who's gotten it for playing the same character in 15 movies." (Los Angeles Times)Cameron Mackintosh's 25-year project--bringing Les Miserables to film
“Anne Hathaway’s ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ is utterly amazing and it could have only happened like that on the screen. Russell Crowe (who plays Javert) wanted the inevitability that he would kill himself to be the key to his part. You can act all that behind the eyes on film. Try it on stage and it would look like Howard Keel was back again,” laughs Mackintosh, evoking one of the most macho and blustery of all musical leading men. (Toronto Star)
Exclusive Interview: Les Miserables Director Tom Hooper
Few directors have risen so quickly in the last few years within the ranks of filmmakers as Tom Hooper. Having made a name for himself directing award-winning movies for television, Hooper ably got over the dreaded sophomore slump curse by making The King's Speech as his second feature. That went on to win multiple Oscars two years ago, not only for Best Picture but also for Hooper himself, which must have contributed to his decision to drive himself to take on the even bigger challenge of directing a film adaptation of the stage musical Les Misérables, written by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublilstage based on Victor Hugo's novel set in 19th Century France (ComingSoon.net)

Hollywood has a special way of dealing with height
Hugh Jackman has shown great range on the screen and stage. But at 6-3, his stature required producers of the “X-Men” movie series to revamp the character of Wolverine. According to comic books, Wolverine stands 5-3. Jackman is almost a whole foot taller. Russell Crowe recently revealed that he was the first choice for Wolverine. Casting Crowe, who bowed out and recommended Jackman, also would have required tweaking Wolverine; he‘s 5-11½. (TribLive)

Liz Smith in The Huffington Post
FROM STAGE to Screen: I attended a very special screening of Tom Hooper's massive movie adaptation of Les Miserables. (Hooper directed the Oscar-winning The King's Speech.) There is a great big embargo about reviewing the movie right now -- it opens on Christmas Day. And as I don't wish to be banned from Peggy Siegal's events, I'll comply, grudgingly. I will say this; the film is unsparingly intense. All the hype about Anne Hathaway's Oscar chances in the role of Fantine is for once hype with spine. She is brilliant, heartbreaking. If she wins the Oscar it will be well-deserved. There was no embargo on the after-party at Porter House, attended by almost the entire cast, including Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne. (Eddie will be the movie's breakout star.)
‘Les Miserables’ Cast Best Friends, Way More Fun Than Us
- Russell Crowe (yes, Russell Crowe) organized a karaoke night for the entire cast the night before filming began.
- And this is what Anne Hathaway had to say about karaoke night; ”You have not lived until you see something as adorable as Amanda [Seyfried] wearing a green Kermit suit rapping to Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’.”
- Speaking of Seyfried, the cast sang “Happy Birthday” to her Sunday after the film’s NYC premiere while Hugh Jackman gave her a lapdance. And even Anna Wintour was smiling.
- Anne Hathaway got to eat oatmeal paste throughout filming! (NewNowNext)

Did “Les Miserables” bring tears to my eyes because it is the holidays and I’m missing someone in my life or was Anne Hathaway’s rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” pure rapture?
I kept tossing this in my mind after coming out of the press preview for Victor Hugo’s classic novel on November 28, three weeks before it opens to theatres on Christmas day.

Mike Fleming Interviews ‘Broken City’ Helmer Allen Hughes On His First Solo Film
DEADLINE: Lumet always had a strong corrupt
antagonist. What was the challenge in getting Russell Crowe to sign on?
He wasn’t doing a lot of movies at the time.
HUGHES
: We had a heavy who is part King Of New York,
part Gordon Gekko. It was a challenge to get Russell. We knew we needed
a movie star, but Russell’s a different kind of movie star: he’s also a
great fucking actor, you know. And there are all these legendary
stories about Russell, so I was anxious to sit down with him and see how
we would jell. We sat down and I saw the way his mind was working, the
zone he was in as he was just getting into crazy physical shape. We went
a few rounds and we were so clearly on the same page. There was a
kinship there I didn’t expect. And the idea of teaming him with Mark
Wahlberg had both of us excited.
DEADLINE: I’ve heard that Russell challenges his directors. True?
HUGHES: I found Russell to be very much like Denzel Washington was on Book Of Eli.
As their director, you better know your shit and know what the fuck
you’re talking about. You better be on your shit, every day, know what
you’re doing all the time and have a point of view. He respects that. If
you’re not coming with your A-game and you don’t have a point of view,
you’re going to get obliterated. So I didn’t have that problem with him.
Wait until you see his performance, man. It is an actor’s actor
performance. My man is in a zone right now, and you could see it from
the moment he showed up to the set. (Deadline.com)
5 Oscar contenders everyone is talking about—and one nobody is (yet)
Movie: Les Misérables
In Theaters: Dec. 25
Directed by: Tom Hopper
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen
Oscar Potential:
Universal Pictures wants Academy members to consider the film version of
the classic stage musical (and even more classic Victor Hugo novel)
about 19th-century French student revolutionaries and a
convict-turned-mayor for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Jackman),
Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, technical
awards and Best Original Song (for "Suddenly," the token new song that
most stage-to-film musicals tack on). The movie has been getting lots of
attention for the groundbreaking tactic of actually letting the actors
sing live rather than having them lip sync to a recording of their own
voices—visually and vocally, it's a winning combination that leaves the
movie with strong chances in the major all-around categories. (CNN)
